Meanwhile, Colton, Shark leader Antonia’s brother, is told by his sister to try and get to know to her friend Dakota, and possibly start a relationship with him, but Colton doesn’t want that and yearns for independence. He approaches his friend Vancouver, who is on parole, for help. The gangs are too proud to care, and Jet leader Will proposes a "rumble" (fight) between the two gangs. Officer Anderson and Lieutenant Friedman up the brief skirmish, telling the gangs that their conflict is pointless since the neighborhood will be imminently demolished to make way for Lincoln Center. In 1957, the Jets, a gang of white youths, fight against the Sharks, a gang of Latinos and African-Americans, for control over San Juan Hill and surrounding areas on Manhattan’s West Side.
